Zika virus genetic diversity and selective pressure: importance for diagnostics, vaccines and therapeutics

  • Authors: Abecasis A, Cuypers L, Libin P, Theys K, Vandamme AM
  • Publication Year: 2017
  • Journal: Tropical Medicine & International Health

During the last years, an increasing number of Zika virus (ZIKV) infections has been reported in Asia and America. Due to socio-environmental factors that remain to be established, this arbovirus has explosively spread to more than 60 countries worldwide. ZIKV infections can result into severe clinical manifestations, with little knowledge available to date about how […]

Epidemic dispersion of HIV and HCV in a population of co-infected Romanian injecting drug users

  • Authors: Abagiu A, Abecasis A, Banica L, Jipa R, Libin P, Neaga E, Nicolae I, Otelea D, Paraschiv S, Pineda-Peña AC, Pingarilho M, Theys K

Co-infections with HIV and HCV are very frequent among people who inject drugs (PWID). However, very few studies comparatively reconstructed the transmission patterns of both viruses in the same population. We have recruited 117 co-infected PWID during a recent HIV outbreak in Romania. Phylogenetic analyses were performed on HIV and HCV sequences in order to […]

HCV1b genome evolution under selective pressure of the cyclophilin inhibitor alisporivir during the DEB-025-HCV-203 phase II clinical trial

  • Authors: Crabbe R, Cuypers L, Kerremans L, Libin P, Snoeck J, Van Dooren S, Vandamme AM, Vuagniaux G

Major advances have revolutionized the HCV antiviral treatment field, with interferon-free combinations of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) resulting into success rates of >90% for all HCV genotypes. Nevertheless, viral eradication at a global level stills remains challenging, stimulating the continued search for new affordable pan-genotypic drugs. To overcome selection of drug resistant variants, targeting host proteins […]

A public HTLV-1 molecular epidemiology database for sequence management and data mining.

  • Authors: Alcantara LC, Araújo TH, de Albuquerque-Junior AE, Edwards D, Galvão-Castro B, Souza-Brito LI, Deforche K, Libin P, Vandamme AM
  • Journal: PLoS One

BACKGROUND:
It is estimated that 15 to 20 million people are infected with the human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1). At present, there are more than 2,000 unique HTLV-1 isolate sequences published. A central database to aggregate sequence information from a range of epidemiological aspects including HTLV-1 infections, pathogenesis, origins, and evolutionary dynamics would be useful to scientists and physicians worldwide.

Comparison of HIV-1 Genotypic Resistance Test Interpretation Systems in Predicting Virological Outcomes Over Time

  • Authors: Assel M, Boucher CA, De Luca A, Fabbiani M, Frentz D, Incardona F, Manca N, Müller V, O Nualláin B, Paredes R, Prosperi M, Quiros-Roldan E, Ruiz L, Sloot PM, Torti C, Van de Vijver DA, Zazzi M, Libin P, Vandamme AM, Van Laethem K

BACKGROUND: Several decision support systems have been developed to interpret HIV-1 drug resistance genotyping results. This study compares the ability of the most commonly used systems (ANRS, Rega, and Stanford’s HIVdb) to predict virological outcome at 12, 24, and 48 weeks. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Included were 3763 treatment-change episodes (TCEs) for which a HIV-1 genotype was […]
