Genomic Surveillance and Population Mobility

Explore the interplay between human mobility, microbial evolution, and environmental change with a global health perspective.

Its core aim is to integrate genomic, epidemiological, environmental and mobility data to better understand and mitigate the emergence and spread of infectious diseases, AMR, and zoonotic spillovers within a One Health and Global Health framework.

By creating a shared genomic and epidemiological data infrastructure, GSPM will connect PPS’s population and migration cohorts, VBD’s vector and reservoir monitoring, PRIME’s pathogen genomics, and CTM’s clinical studies.

Joint projects and training programs — including PhD and postdoctoral research, workshops on genomic epidemiology, and capacity-building in surveillance and data governance — will foster interdisciplinary collaboration.

GSPM will also apply AI, spatial modelling, and omics-based tools to analyze pathogen transmission dynamics in relation to migration patterns, environmental factors, and health system vulnerabilities.

GSPM’s findings will be translated into actionable policies through collaboration with PPS and CTM, promoting evidence-based decision-making on migrant health, surveillance strategies, and antimicrobial stewardship. By engaging with Lusophone and international health authorities, GSPM will enhance preparedness for transboundary outbreaks and promote innovation in diagnostic and genomic tools adapted for field and low resource settings.

GSPM will reinforce GHTM’s leadership in genomic surveillance, preparedness for emerging infections and GH, promoting resilient and equitable health systems across Portugal, Europe, and CPLP.
