Global Health and Tropical Medicine – GHTM

Global Health and Tropical Medicine – GHTM is the R&D Unit of Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical (IHMT) of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa.

We are a Unit with a unique multi- and interdisciplinary expertise on global public health and biomedical sciences, whose main MISSION is to conduct research, provide training and implement equity in sustainable Global Health.

Our VISION is to be a leading biomedical R&D Unit in Global Health (GH) and Tropical Medicine (TM) bridging Portuguese-speaking institutions in a worldwide context to produce scientific evidence for the development of health policies within a GLOBAL HEALTH IN ONE HEALTH VISION and strengthening Portugal’s role as a leading partner in the development and implementation of a GH research agenda.

GHTM combines population-level research with state-of-the-art laboratory investigation of pathogens and vectors, supported by specialized infrastructures making it a high-laboratory intensity level R&D unit.

In a context of political, economic, social and climatic changes with significant impact worldwide, we aim to consolidate a R&D Unit devoted to global health and tropical medicine, strengthening Portugal’s role as a leading partner in the development and implementation of a global health research agenda.

GHTM brings together researchers with a track record in Tropical Medicine and International/Global Health and aims at tackling neglected and emerging diseases under a multidisciplinary approach and covering aspects from basic biomedical research to public health policies.

Vision GHTM

The R&D Unit aims to generate excellent science to improve health through evidence-based interventions promoting health equity.
