BIOHUB & Available Software

Bioinformatics Infrastructure

The Bioinformatics Infrastructure — BIOHUB centralizes the genomic sequencing and bioinformatics capacities of GHTM, providing researchers with access to sequencing technologies, computational resources, training, and expert support.

BIOHUB brings together the MinION sequencing platform and a dedicated Linux server environment, supporting the analysis of whole-genome sequencing data and other high-throughput datasets generated across GHTM research projects. The infrastructure provides user guidance, technical supervision, equipment maintenance, and training activities to strengthen bioinformatics capacity within the institution.

Since 2017, BIOHUB has supported researchers working on projects involving viral genomics, arthropod vectors, antimicrobial resistance, fish and wastewater surveillance, and the spatiotemporal analysis of pathogens and vectors. These activities have contributed to projects such as ZIKAlliance, BIOSAFE, and INTEGRATE.

What BIOHUB Provides

BIOHUB supports GHTM researchers and collaborators through:

  • Access to genomic sequencing using the MinION sequencing platform;
  • Access to high-performance Linux-based computational resources;
  • Bioinformatics support for whole-genome sequencing and related analyses;
  • Guidance on data processing, reproducible workflows, and good computational practices;
  • Training in sequencing data analysis, command-line tools, and bioinformatics workflows;
  • Technical supervision, infrastructure maintenance, and user onboarding.

Areas of Application

BIOHUB contributes to research across several areas of global health and tropical medicine, including:

  • Pathogen genomics and molecular epidemiology;
  • Viral genome characterization;
  • Vector-borne disease research;
  • Antimicrobial resistance studies;
  • Environmental and wastewater surveillance;
  • Genomic data analysis for public health research;
  • Capacity building in bioinformatics and computational biology.

Available Software

BIOHUB provides access to selected licensed software to support research activities. These tools are available for specific analytical needs, including sequence analysis, statistical analysis, flow cytometry data analysis, and qualitative research.

Software Main use
Geneious Prime Sequence analysis, molecular biology workflows, genome annotation, primer design, and visualization of genomic data
GraphPad Prism Statistical analysis, graphing, and scientific data visualization
FlowJo Flow cytometry data analysis and visualization
MAXQDA (*) Qualitative and mixed-methods data analysis, including coding and analysis of interviews, focus groups, and textual data
