How can decades of scientific research, surveillance and collaboration bring a major parasitic disease closer to elimination?
This GHTM session will explore China’s practical experience in controlling and eliminating schistosomiasis, featuring Professor Xiao-Nong Zhou, one of the world’s leading experts in tropical diseases. The session will highlight innovative, evidence-based strategies grounded in a One Health approach, integrating epidemiology, ecology and public health. Professor Zhou’s work has contributed to the development of national surveillance-response systems and strengthened efforts to control parasitic diseases across China.

About Xiao-Nong Zhou
Professor Xiao-Nong Zhou is Chief Scientist for Parasitic Diseases Control at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) and Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Tropical Diseases in Shanghai. A leading international expert in tropical diseases, he has over 40 years of experience advancing innovative One Health approaches to disease control and elimination. His research focuses on the spatial epidemiology of parasitic diseases and evidence-based strategies to support national control programmes. His contributions to surveillance-response systems have played an important role in strengthening disease elimination efforts in China. Professor Zhou also holds leadership roles at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and serves on several national and international expert committees. He obtained his PhD in Population Biology from the University of Copenhagen in 1994 and has authored more than 400 peer-reviewed publications, making significant contributions to ecology, epidemiology and global health.
