In the Brazilian Amazon, the suspected source of infection in an outbreak of acute Chagas disease involving 10 patients was Euterpe oleracea (açaí berry) juice. Chagas disease is an emergent tropical disease in the Brazilian Amazon Region, with an increasing number of cases in recent decades. In this region, the sylvatic cycle of Trypanosoma cruzi transmission, which constitutes a reservoir of parasites that might be associated with specific molecular, epidemiological and clinical traits, has been little explored.

In Latin America, data on chloroquine (CQ)-resistant Plasmodium vivax is limited, even with the current research efforts to sustain an efficient malaria control program in all these endemic countries, where malaria still is a major public health issue.
