Mycobacterium marinum is a nontuberculous mycobacteria with worldwide distribution that lives in fresh or salt water and is responsible for infections in fish, and sometimes in humans. Human disease consists mainly of cutaneous nodules, but deep structure involvement may also occur. Diagnosis of M. marinum infection remains a challenge, with a considerable time delay between […]

Emergence of high-level colistin resistance in an acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolate mediated by inactivation of the global regulator H-NS

  • Autores: Deveson Lucas D, Crane B, Wright A, Han ML, Moffatt J, Bulach D, Gladman SL, Powell D, Aranda J, Seemann T, Machado D, Pacheco T, Marques T, Viveiros M, Nation R, Li J, Harper M, Boyce JD

Colistin is a crucial last-line drug used for the treatment of life-threatening infections caused by multidrug-resistant strains of the Gram-negative bacterium Acinetobacter baumannii However, colistin-resistant A. baumannii isolates can still be isolated following failed colistin therapy. Resistance is most often mediated by the addition of phosphoethanolamine (pEtN) to lipid A by PmrC, following missense mutations in the pmrCAB operon encoding PmrC […]

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is the most common cause of acquired epilepsy in resource-poor countries. We report the case of a 24-year-old woman born and residing in Guinea-Bissau, who was transferred to Portugal two months after the onset of a possible meningitis (fever, headache, seizures, and coma) that did not respond to antibiotic treatment. The diagnosis of […]

Progressive disseminated histoplasmosis as a presentation of AIDS in a patient from the Congo: the role of skin biopsy

  • Autores: Borges-Costa J, Marques T, Sacramento-Marques M, Soares-Almeida L
