November 13, 2024

Promoting Knowledge Exchange and Public Health Cooperation Among CPLP Members

GHTM and the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (IHMT-NOVA), reaffirming its commitment to solving global problems, actively participated in the Lusophone Public Health Conference. This event, held on November 11 and 12, 2024, at the Lisbon Congress Center, fosters the exchange of knowledge and cooperation in public health among members of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP).

The conference featured various researchers and distinguished representatives from GHTM & IHMT-NOVA, including its Director, Professor Dr. Filomeno Fortes, who delivered opening remarks at 1:30 PM on November 11.

Renowned international experts and representatives from Portuguese-speaking nations gathered to discuss topics aligned with the objectives and goals of the CPLP Strategic Plan for Health Cooperation 2023-2027 (PECS/CPLP 2023-2027). The program was marked by high-level sessions exploring various dimensions of public health.

Conference Sessions

Several GHTM members participated in the conference, contributing their years of experience and analysis to address complex public health issues:

  • Session 1: National Health Systems: Public Health Perspectives, with Professor Dr. Luís Sambo, Visiting Professor at IHMT-NOVA, provided an in-depth critical assessment of the challenges and opportunities for national health systems in Lusophone countries.
  • Session 2: Information and Communication in Public Health, moderated by Professor Dr. Fernando Cupertino, President of the IHMT Council and wtih notable Speaker, Dr. Sérgio Chicumbe, Director of Health and Well-Being Research at the National Institute of Health of Mozambique and PhD in International Health from IHMT-NOVA.

Oral Presentations and Poster Sessions

In addition to plenary sessions and round tables, the conference included oral presentations and poster sessions, aimed to promote and disseminate research on defined thematic areas:

  1. National Health Systems
  2. Training and Development of the Public Health Workforce
  3. Information and Communication in Health
  4. Monitoring Sustainable Development Goals
  5. Preparedness for Public Health Emergencies
  6. Health Research and Bioethics

Several GHTM & IHMT-NOVA researchers participated, showcasing their work and contributing to the conference’s success.
