Highlights from the First Tropical Summit in Lisbon

November 13, 2024

From November 4 to 7, 2024, the Lisbon Congress Center hosted the inaugural Tropical Summit, centered on the theme “Foreseeing Answers to Global Challenges.” This international event brought together global leaders, experts, and researchers to discuss critical issues related to health and sustainable development in tropical regions.

The Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (IHMT-NOVA) and Global Health and Tropical Medicine (GHTM) were proud partners of this significant initiative, aimed at fostering dialogue and co-creating solutions aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Throughout the summit, IHMT and GHTM were prominently featured in the exhibition hall and participated in several key scientific sessions:

November 5 – Dr. Marcelo Urbano Ferreira, representing Professor Dr. Filomeno Fortes, participated in the plenary session and round table on Planetary Health, addressing the crucial links between health and the environment from a global perspective.

November 6 – Professor Dr. Miguel Viveiros, GHTM Scientific Coordinator, chaired a session on Global Health and Tropical Medicine, where GHTM researchers shared their pioneering work in various fields. With the core connecting theme of ONE HEALTH, key topics included:

  • The Tick Zoonoses by Prof. Dr. Ana Domingos
  • BLOODless, a More Sustainable Approach to Raise Vectors of Diseases by Professor Dr. Henrique Silveira
  • Antimicrobial Resistance – An Ongoing Syndemic by Professor Dr. Miguel Viveiros
  • Sleeping Sickness – The Long Road to Elimination by Prof. Dr. Jorge Seixas

The active participation of IHMT-NOVA and GHTM in this summit underscores our commitment to addressing the challenges of global and tropical health, contributing to innovative solutions that meet the health needs of populations worldwide.
