ABSTRACT ‘Background:’ There is a paucity of recent data and knowledge on mosquito diversity and potential vectors of arboviruses in South Africa, with most of the available data dating back to the 1950s–1970s. Aedes and Culex species are the major vectors of some of the principal arboviruses which have emerged and re-emerged in the past […]

CORRESPONDENCE Dear Editor, A 90-year-old man presented with a 1-month history of fatigue and rapidly progressive, widespread skin lesions. Physical examination exhibited numerous erythematous to violaceous tumors and bruise-like patches scattered through his trunk and limbs. Enlarged bilateral axillary lymph nodes were noted. Peripheral blood workup revealed mild macrocytic anemia (hemoglobin 11.3 g/dl, MCV 98 […]

ABSTRACT The spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) resulted in an extraordinary global public health crisis. In early 2020, Cyprus, among other European countries, was affected by the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic and adopted lockdown measures in March 2020 to limit the initial outbreak on the island. In this study, we performed a comprehensive […]

The recent spread of invasive mosquito species, such as Aedes albopictus and the seasonal sporadic transmission of autochthonous cases of arboviral diseases (e.g., dengue, chikungunya, Zika) in temperate areas, such as Europe and North America, highlight the importance of effective mosquito-control interventions to reduce not only nuisance, but also major threats for public health.
