Samira D’Almeida

Samira D’Almeida holds a degree in Biological Sciences with a specialization in Biotechnology from the Centro de Ciências Agrárias e Engenharias, Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, Brazil. During her studies (2011-2014), she conducted research on fasciolosis, host-parasite interactions, and the use of medicinal plants and phytotherapeutic products as part of a scientific initiation scholarship at CCAE-UFES.
She earned her PhD in Biomedical Sciences, specializing in Parasitology, from the NOVA Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Her doctoral research (2015-2019) focused on molecular diagnosis in definitive and intermediate hosts of fasciolosis, supported by a fellowship from CNPq, Brazil. Samira also worked as a data analyst and report-writing technician at PhD Trials – Contract Research Organization, Portugal (2022-2024).
Her research interests include the study of molluscan hosts related to fasciolosis, with a focus on molecular diagnostics, epidemiology, bioecology, systematics, and control strategies. She is also interested in environmental monitoring and risk analysis of neglected tropical diseases. Currently, Samira works as a Natural Sciences tutor for 7th to 9th-grade students at Planeta Aprender and volunteers as a post-doctoral researcher at the Department of Medical Parasitology, IHMT-NOVA.
The main areas of interest are Medical and Health Sciences, Parasitology, Molecular Biology, Infectious Diseases and Malacology, with key completed projects:
- Fasciolosis – development of diagnostic techniques applied in a definitive and intermediate host – Grant from 2015 to 2019 / PhD Student Fellow;
