Mariamo Jaime Machado Parruque

PhD student

Teacher, Researcher and Course Director at Eduardo Mondlane University

GHTM Group: TB, HIV and opportunistic diseases and pathogens

ProfileResearchTop Research Outputs

Currently a PhD candidate in Biomedical Sciences at IHMT-NOVA, she holds a Master’s degree in Biotechnology (2013) and a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences (2007), both from Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM). Since 2009, she has served as a University Assistant at UEM, engaged in teaching, research, and academic management.

In administrative and pedagogical roles, she has been the Director of the Applied Biology Program since 2013 and has coordinated the Curriculum Review process of the Department of Biological Sciences since 2014. Between 2023 and 2024, she also served as Deputy Coordinator of the Alumni Association at the Faculty of Sciences, UEM. She has experience in organizing institutional seminars and supporting postgraduate programs, notably as a teaching assistant for the Antibody Production Techniques course in the Master’s in Biotechnology (2012).

In teaching, she is responsible for courses such as Genetics, Molecular Genetics, Mycology, and Molecular Biology Techniques, consolidating continuous experience in training students in core areas of Biological Sciences.

Her career combines a solid academic background, leadership in institutional processes, and a strong commitment to pedagogical and scientific innovation, with a focus on Molecular Biology, Genetics, Health, and Food Safety.

Her research focuses on Molecular Biology and Genetics, with an emphasis on molecular diagnostics for the detection of aflatoxigenic fungi, food safety, and the integration of genomic data into public health systems.

She participates in scientific cooperation projects with Portuguese universities, fostering mutual capacity-building through training, lectures, laboratory practice, and the exchange of experiences between faculty and students.

She serves as Deputy Coordinator of the international project “Validation of RGB Imaging to Analyze Growth of Aspergillus spp. and Aflatoxin B1 Contamination of Groundnuts and Maize in Sub-Saharan Africa, with Emphasis in Mozambique”, in collaboration with Professor Dr. Edgar Cambaza (UNISCED) and MSc. Edson Mongo (CISPOC). The project aims to validate innovative imaging techniques to analyze fungal contamination in key crops essential for food security in Africa.

She is also a member of the technical group of PLAGIM (Ministry of Health – INS, Mozambique), dedicated to integrating genomic data into healthcare services and surveillance systems. This initiative seeks to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and risks in the application of genomics, while proposing strategic interventions to ensure sustainability and efficiency.

Her work combines applied research, technological innovation, and direct contributions to public policy in health and food security.
