Débora Alexandra Dias Marques

PhD student

GHTM Group: TB, HIV and opportunistic diseases and pathogens

Profile

Débora Alexandra Dias Marques is a scientist and mycologist with an ambition that transcends the lab. With a strong academic foundation, including a Bachelor’s in Bioanalysis from de Central University of Venezuela and a Master’s in Medical Microbiology from de Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, she is preparing to start her PhD in Biomedical Sciences at the Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (IHMT NOVA).

What truly consumes and energizes Débora is medical mycology, and everything related to the diagnosis of fungal diseases and antifungal resistance. Currently, her research is focused on the field of drug repurposing against Candida albicans. During her PhD, she aims to expand this approach to other Candida species and thoroughly evaluate the pharmacodynamics, evaluation of drug efficacy and drug cytotoxicity.

Her study on drug repurposing against C. albicans has been selected for an oral presentation at Microbiotec 2025 (University of Azores, December). She has also presented her findings as a poster communication at TIMM 2025 (Bilbao), the Gordon Research Conference in Multi-Drug Efflux Systems (Italy, 2025), and as an e-poster flash oral presentation at ESCMID Global 2025 (Vienna).
