João Piedade is an Assistant Professor of Medical Virology at the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine at Universidade NOVA de Lisboa. He graduated in Biology in 1989 from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, obtained a Master’s degree in Biochemical Engineering (Biotechnology) in 1996 from the Technical University of Lisbon and a Doctor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences (Microbiology) in 2004 from NOVA, with the thesis “Expression of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) Nef protein in Escherichia coli as a fusion product with the OprI lipoprotein of the outer membrane of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and induction of anti-Nef humoral immunity in an animal model.”

His current research interests focus on the evolution of primate lentiviruses (human and simian immunodeficiency viruses) and the molecular epidemiology (genotyping and characterization of drug resistance) of HIV-1 and HBV (hepatitis B virus).
