HIGHLIGHTS • Complete and partial cISF sequences were characterized using multiple analyses. • cISF sequences show low diversity and entropy, and evolve under purifying selection. • Recombination does not seem to impact the evolution of cISF extensively. • Different datasets displayed high phylogenetic, but mostly low temporal signals. • Spatiotemporal dispersal analyses suggested cISF distribution […]

A diverse assemblage of RNA and DNA viruses found in mosquitoes collected in southern Portugal

This work describes the detection and partial characterization of mosquito-borne virus genomic sequences, based on the analysis of mosquitoes collected from the Spring to Fall of 2018 in the Algarve (southern Portugal). The viral survey that was carried out using multiple primer sets disclosed the presence of both RNA and DNA viral sequences in these […]

We describe the full genetic characterization of an insect-specific flavivirus (ISF) from Culex theileri (Theobald) mosquitoes collected in Portugal. This represents the first isolation and full characterization of an ISF from Portuguese mosquitoes. The virus, designated CTFV, for Culex theileri flavivirus, was isolated in the C6/36 Stegomyia albopicta (=Aedes albopictus) cell line, and failed to replicate in vertebrate (Vero) cells in common with other ISFs.
