Date: 26 November 2025
Time: 11:00-13:00
Location: ZOOM & Sala Fraga de Azevedo | IHMT-NOVA
As part of the “Celebrating New Research Journeys” GHTM Series of Sessions, the latest edition will highlight the scientific paths of two of our new tenure-track researchers: Joana Marques and Sofia Seabra.
Joana Marques, from VBD-GHTM Research Group, will share her research journey at IHMT/GHTM, culminating in the development of Bloodless, an innovative artificial diet that enables the rearing of Anopheles mosquitoes without the need for blood. She will also present her upcoming projects, recently funded by FCT, which focus on investigating the role of cholesterol in mosquito reproduction and vector competence, as well as exploring the modulation of cholesterol metabolism through probiotics as an innovative strategy for vector control.
Sofia Seabra, from PPS-GHTM Research Group, will present her research on efficient sampling strategies, crucial for epidemic control, particularly in resource-limited settings. She will discuss the application of individual-based models to simulate dengue virus spread based on key transmission factors, and AI-driven optimization strategies for clinical, entomological, and wastewater sampling schemes. By incorporating spatial data, these approaches aim to enhance early warning systems and optimize resource allocation for infectious disease surveillance and control.
Come discover how these new research lines are opening promising pathways for global health!
If you are a GHTM member, you will receive the details of the session by e-mail. If you are not a GHTM member and would like to join the session, please contact us at ghtm-info@ihmt.unl.pt.
