ENVOLVE Ciência PALOP, developed by Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, aims to support the development of scientific careers in the PALOP – Portuguese-speaking African countries – Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe – in particular young researchers under the age of 40.
Its main goal is to help young researchers from the PALOP countries consolidate their scientific careers in health sciences in these countries.
In the first phase of the competition, the support to be awarded consists of a monthly grant to the selected candidate for a 6-month scientific internship in scientific institutions in Portugal.
In the second phase, the support to be granted consists of a subsidy per selected application, over a period of three years. The grant will be awarded to the researcher’s host institution, in one of the PALOP countries, and must be applied to the selected health research project.
Since its first edition, the GHTM has participated in this initiative by presenting internships supervised by several members of the GHTM Research Groups. Filomena Manjate, Edson Cassinela and Gissela Garcia were the PhD researchers selected for the 6-month internships promoted by the GHTM:
- Filomena Manjate: “Desenvolvimento de protocolos laboratoriais e bioinformáticos para identificação de agentes patogénicos e análise de resistências antimicrobianas em águas residuais em contextos de recursos limitados”, supervised by Sofia Seabra and Sofia Santos Costa (THOP- GHTM);
- Edson Cassinela: “Implementação e gestão de biobancos num contexto de saúde global” supervidsed by Ana Paula Arez, Coordinator of BIOBANCO;
- Gissela Garcia: “Doenças febris agudas na África Subsaariana: causas mais comuns, estratégias de diagnóstico e protocolos de atendimento”, supervised by Marcelo Urbano Ferreira and Jorge Seixas, both researchers from IHC-GHTM Research Group.
GHTM congratulates the researchers and wishes good luck on the internships!
