IHMT-NOVA Celebrates Redesignation as WHO Collaborating Centre for Health Workforce Policy and Planning

August 9, 2024

The Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (IHMT) at NOVA University Lisbon is proud to announce its redesignation as a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Health Workforce Policy and Planning. This redesignation, effective to 2028, underscores the IHMT NOVA’s ongoing commitment to advancing health workforce policy and planning on a global scale.

The WHO Collaborating Centre for Health Workforce Policy and Planning at IHMT will continue to be a vital hub for research, education, and policy development. Under the leadership of Professor Tiago Correia, the Centre is dedicated to addressing critical challenges in health workforce development, particularly within Portuguese-speaking countries and Europe.

Key Objectives and Mission:

The Centre aims to contribute significantly to WHO’s global strategies by:

  • Enhancing the quality and qualification of human resources, focusing on attraction, retention, and equitable distribution of health workers.
  • Providing professional training aligned with digital transformation and evolving labor market demands.
  • Strengthening the resilience and planning capacities of health systems through cutting-edge research and the promotion of management and leadership skills.
  • Protecting and supporting the health workforce in public health emergencies and conflict zones.

Collaborative Efforts:

The Centre seeks to foster partnerships with government organizations, public and private health institutions, higher education institutes, international health agencies, and non-governmental organizations operating in conflict and emergency contexts. These collaborations aim to enhance the impact and reach of the Centre’s initiatives, ensuring that health workforce policies and planning are robust, effective, and inclusive.
