The Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (IHMT) of Universidade Nova de Lisboa is a higher education and scientific research institution that aims at developing the scientific knowledge of health problems related with the tropics. The research at IHMT is presently embodied in the R&D center Global Health and Tropical Medicine (GHTM) – rated as ‘Excellent’ in the recent international evaluation of Portuguese Scientific R&D Centers carried out by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT).
GHTM is organized around two thematic lines, congregating three research groups that converge to the United Nations post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (that succeed to the Millennium Development Goals). These goals aim at improving the lives of marginalized groups, reducing the burden of diseases of poverty and promoting sustainable development. Moreover, GHTM’s thematic lines are aligned with the new EU research agenda – Horizon 2020.
