The first edition of the course “Python Applied to Biomedical Sciences” was organized and instructed by the GHTM researchers Filipe Lopes (VBD) and Sofia Seabra (THOP). The course, held at IHMT between 8 – 12 May, was attended by 10 participants.
Participation did not require prior knowledge of programming, covering subjects from basic concepts to concrete examples of its use in Biomedical Sciences, such as programmatic access to genetics and bibliography databases, collection, and visualization of biodiversity data on maps, to concepts of Machine Learning.
The students have prepared projects based on the concepts presented at the course that are accessible at https://github.com/xfil/IHMT-PythonCourse-2023
According to the organizers, “the main objective of the course was to allow students to understand the functioning of the code and potential uses and applications of this programming language in different areas of research and to contribute to a greater knowledge in the area of information technologies and its interface with other areas of science”, they concluded.
