We are proud to announce that GHTM – Global Health and Tropical Medicine, the R&D unit of the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine at NOVA University Lisbon (IHMT NOVA), has been awarded the highest classification of “Excellent” in the 2023–2024 evaluation conducted by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). This achievement reaffirms the success attained in the previous evaluation cycle.
This recognition is part of the provisional from the national evaluation of Research and Development Units, which involved over 315 independent international experts from 35 countries, who assessed 336 applications. The outcome highlights the outstanding scientific quality and societal impact of Portuguese research institutions.
As the key unit of IHMT-NOVA, GHTM is distinguished by its international scope, its active collaboration with Portuguese-speaking countries, and its vital role in training highly qualified professionals in global health and tropical medicine. GHTM’s work contributes significantly to building capacity in African Portuguese-speaking countries, fostering resilient and sustainable health systems.
GHTM’s research reflects a strong commitment to science with social impact, particularly through innovative approaches to infectious diseases that are applied in vulnerable settings.

This evaluation also reinforces NOVA University’s leadership in the national scientific landscape, with 93% of its R&D Units rated “Excellent” or “Very Good”, and further solidifies IHMT NOVA’s role among Portugal’s foremost centres of excellence advancing science for the health of global populations.
