Fiocruz visits the BIOTROP and Historical Collections of the IHMT-NOVA. On April 17 and 18, the GHTM IHMT-NOVA biobank (Biotropical Resources, BIOTROP) received Aline Souto, Executive Coordinator of Fiocruz Biological Collections (Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, Brazil), and Carlos Nascimento, Manager of Biological Materials at Fiocruz’s COVID-19 Biobank, on a visit to the biobank and the historical collections of the IHMT, including the Entomoteca Henrique Ribeiro and Helena Ramos, the Museum and the Malacology Collection.

Among several relevant aspects, “issues related to institutional governance policies in the preservation of these resources were discussed, as well as  the essential operational procedures for organizing biological collections, ensuring compliance with the sample quality management system” revealed Ana Paula Arez, BIOTROP Coordinator and VBD-GHTM Group leader.

Additionally, the visit to the BIOTROP and Historical Collections allowed to exchange expertise on common challenges in the preservation and management of historic collections and possible strategies and good practices to face them. “The exchange of information and experiences will contribute to the continuous improvement of preservation activities and adequate management of the biological and historical heritage preserved at IHMT”, said Ana Tavares, Biobank Technical Coordinator.

“This visit represented another important step in promoting collaboration between GHTM-IHMT-NOVA and Fiocruz, two leading institutions in the field of Tropical Medicine”, concluded Ana Paula Arez.
