At 6pm on September 27, Erica Simão, a master’s student in Public Health and Development received the António Coutinho Science Award for her master’s protocol “Evaluating resistance to Dolutegravir in patients in ART” guided by the PPS-GHTM associated professor Ana Abecasis, and which is developing between IHMT and the Maputo Military Hospital. The student presented her research work and showed a willingness to contribute to a better follow-up of HIV-1 patients in Mozambique, who represent more than 10% of the national population.
During the ceremony, Erica Simão referred that “António Coutinho Science Awards allowed me to take the first steps in the search for answers to what is a disturbing question and that I have had for a long time”. “For this I will be eternally grateful”, she acknowledged.
The António Coutinho Science Awards program is an initiative of the Gulbenkian Institute of Science, in partnership with Merck and the Municipality of Oeiras, which aim to encourage and support scientific research projects of PALOP citizens or their descendants.
