The studant Jéssica Antunes, from the VIIth Edition of the MSc in Medical Microbiology at UNL, to develop her thesis at IHMT / UNL under the guidance of Miguel Viveiros and Diana Machado, received the best poster award in the section “Health Microbiology and Biotechnology” of the 17th National Congress of Microbiology and Biotechnology – MICROBIOTEC 17 – held from December 7 to 9, 2017, at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Porto. The award-winning paper “Correlation between resistance to carbapenems, β-lactamases, porins and efflux pumps in clinical isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii” shows that efflux contributes to carbapenem resistance in A. baumannii strains producing carbapenemases and that antimicrobial activity of carbapenems can be potentiated in the presence of efflux inhibitors such as thioridazine. The use of compounds capable of inhibiting efflux pumps in carbapenem resistant A. baumannii may increase the efficacy and extend the clinical usefulness of these antibiotics and may be considered in the development of new adjuvant therapeutic strategies for the treatment of these serious infections.
