Biobank
The biobank Biotropical Resources (BIOTROP) is a strategic infrastructure of GHTM/IHMT NOVA created in late 2016 to improve research on health sciences, particularly on tropical medicine and infectious diseases.
BIOTROP has excellent storage conditions, contributing to the availability of high-quality biological resources for the scientific community. Collections are very heterogeneous, ranging from vectors and reservoirs, to pathogens of human and companion animals’ origin.
BIOTROP is prepared to receive, preserve, and distribute the biological products by strictly following the legal and ethical issues, Nagoya protocol and the international best practice guidelines for these infrastructures. Data management and confidentiality good practices were recognized through the Data Privacy Impact Assessment (DPIA) evaluation performed by NOVA Data Protection Officer (DPO) (2019).
BIOTROP is part of the Portuguese Roadmap of Research Infrastructures, as member of two networks – Portuguese microBiological Resources Center Network (Pt-mBRCN, www.mbrcn.pt) and National Biobanks Infrastructure (Biobanco.pt, www.biobanco.pt).
The organizational framework of Biotropical Resources comprises a General Coordination (Ana Paula Arez), a Technical Coordination (Ana Tavares), a Scientific Committee (Microbiology – Celso Cunha and Isabel Couto, Parasitology – Silvana Belo, Tropical and Infectious Diseases Clinic – Luís Varandas), a Technical Committee (all PhD researchers of GHTM/IHMT NOVA) and external Consultants (Profª Helena Pereira de Melo, Fac Direito NOVA, Prof Nelson Lima, Univ Minho, Prof Sérgio Dias, iMM, Univ Lisboa).
