Webinar Explores Strategies for the Control and Elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases

January 30, 2026

The Centro de Investigação em Saúde de Manhiça (CISM) will host an online webinar on 2 February, at 08:30 (Lisbon time), as part of the celebrations marking World Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) Day, observed annually on 30 January. This initiative is integrated into global efforts to promote the control, elimination and eradication of neglected tropical diseases, which continue to affect millions of people worldwide.

Entitled “From Control to Elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases”, the webinar will bring together experts from different institutions to discuss current challenges, research advances and implementation strategies in the field of NTDs. The programme reflects the importance of multidisciplinary and collaborative approaches to tackling diseases that disproportionately affect vulnerable populations.

The event includes the participation of Manuela Calado, a researcher from VBD–GHTM Research Group, who will present on “(Re)emergence of Cercarial Dermatitis in Europe”, highlighting emerging and re-emerging challenges associated with parasitic diseases in non-endemic regions.

Speakers and topics

  • Francisco Chilengue, MD (MISAU) – Current situation and strategies for rabies control and elimination
  • Delfino Vubil, PhD (CISM) – Evaluation of test-and-treat strategies for diarrhoea caused by Cryptosporidium in children under five years of age
  • Valdemiro Novela (CISM) – Implementation strategies for integrated control of Taenia solium taeniasis/cysticercosis, soil-transmitted helminths and schistosomiasis in Mozambique
  • Manuela Calado, PhD (IHMT NOVA) – (Re)emergence of cercarial dermatitis in Europe

This webinar represents an important opportunity to learn about the latest strategies and innovations in NTD research and control, as well as to exchange experiences with experts working in diverse epidemiological and operational contexts.

Participation is open upon registration.
