Professor Isabel Inês Araújo Honoured at First International Forum “Women and the Challenges of Development” in Cabo Verde

June 6, 2025

On May 30, Professor Isabel Inês Araújo of the University of Cabo Verde (Uni-CV) and member of GHTM, was honoured at the inaugural International Forum “Women and the Challenges of Development”, held in Cabo Verde.

The Forum was created as a space for women to exchange experiences, share ideas, and propose solutions to today’s most pressing development challenges. Inspired by decades of progress in gender equality and the resilience of Cape Verdean women, the event also marked two major milestones: the 50th anniversary of Cabo Verde’s independence and the long-standing presence of the United Nations in the country.

Beyond celebrating achievements, the Forum served as a platform to strengthen cooperation among leaders and promote initiatives with tangible social impact.

Professor Araújo was recognized for her outstanding contributions to public health, particularly through the RESPIRA-CV project, which investigates the relationship between the airway microbiome and asthma in Cape Verdean children. She was also commended for her key role in training health professionals and her ongoing collaboration with GHTM | IHMT-NOVA, where she contributes to both research projects and advanced training programmes.

In addition, Professor Araújo plays a central role in the coordination of the Master’s Programme in Field Epidemiology at Uni-CV, developed in close partnership with GHTM | IHMT NOVA and part of the EDCTP2 programme supported by the European Union.

GHTM congratulates Professor Isabel Inês Araújo on this well-deserved recognition and proudly acknowledges her academic and scientific contributions, as well as her efforts to strengthen ties between Portugal and Cabo Verde.
