NOVA Talks: GHTM Researchers on Climate Change, One Health, and Global Health Challenges

NOVA Talks brings together experts from NOVA University and special guests to dive deep into the most pressing issues affecting our society. Released on the last Thursday of every month, each episode reflects NOVA’s strategic vision as a civic and global university, reinforcing its commitment to serving the country and society through knowledge. The first series focuses on key topics in the field of health, offering insightful discussions and innovative perspectives.

In the sixth episode, the featured topic is “Global Health: Climate Change and One Health”, exploring the connection between climate change and the “One Health” concept, which integrates human, animal, and environmental health.

The episode delves into how extreme climate events affect ecosystems and communities, emphasizing the need for an integrated approach.

Joining the discussion are Carla Maia, a veterinary parasitology expert and researcher at GHTM | IHMT-NOVA, and Margarida Alho, a veterinarian and researcher at the National School of Public Health (ENSP NOVA), both members of the VBD – Vector Borne Diseases Group  at GHTM.

Episode 5 – Social Prescribing

This episode delves into Social Prescribing, an innovative approach that goes beyond traditional treatments. Recently implemented as a network in Portugal by NOVA’s National School of Public Health, it promotes physical and mental health, reduces social isolation, and builds healthier communities. Guests include Sónia Dias, Director of the National School of Public Health, and Ana Rodrigues, professor at NOVA Medical School.

Episode 4 – Digital Health: Trends and Challenges to Improve Healthcare

Digital health is transforming interactions between patients, professionals, and healthcare systems with smart, integrated tools to improve care. Beyond digitizing processes, it rethinks healthcare by centering patients, ensuring equitable access, and preparing professionals for AI and precision medicine. Experts leading the discussion include Teresa Magalhães (ENSP NOVA), Guilherme Victorino (NOVA IMS), and Isabel Craveiro, a researcher at GHTM | IHMT-NOVA, member of the PPS – Population Health, Policies and Services group and facilitator of the cross-cutting issue on Fair Research Partnerships.

Episode 3 – Family Health Units – Model C

This episode explores Family Health Units – Model C (USF-C), a healthcare model in Portugal, years in the making and now facing criticism as it moves forward. Joining the discussion are Bruno Heleno, Professor of Family Medicine at NOVA Medical School, and Julian Perelman, Professor at the National School of Public Health.

Episode 2 – Antimicrobial Resistance: Challenges and Strategies
This episode focuses on antimicrobial resistance, a Public Health threat declared by the WHO. Discussing this critical issue are Dr. Carlos Palos (Beatriz Ângelo Hospital), Paulo Sousa (ENSP NOVA), and Raquel Sá Leão (ITQB NOVA), a leader in molecular microbiology research.

Episode 1 – For Our Health: A NOVA Perspective

This is the inaugural episode of NOVA Saúde Talks, the official health podcast of NOVA University Lisbon. Join Cláudio M. Soares, Pro-Rector coordinating the strategic NOVA Saúde platform, along with professors Pedro Pita Barros (NOVA SBE), Isabel Craveiro (GHTM | IHMT-NOVA), and Paulo Sousa (ENSP NOVA), who oversee the area of health organization and management. In this initial conversation, the discussion focuses on local health units.
