Last week, the prestigious journal The Lancet published the study entitled ‘Concurrent outbreaks of mpox in Africa—an update,’ conducted by a team of international researchers, including Professor Ana Abecasis, GHTM | IHMT-NOVA researcher and facilitator of the cross-cutting issue Global Pathogen Dispersion and Population Mobility.
This work examines the simultaneous outbreaks of Mpox in Africa, focusing on clade 1a, the emerging clade 1b, and the clade 2b lineage. It follows the declaration of Mpox (previously known as Monkeypox) as a public health emergency in the Democratic Republic of Congo by the World Health Organization (WHO) in August 2024.
The article provides a comparative study with the global outbreak of 2022, highlighting differences in transmission, severity, and challenges in diagnosis and treatment. The review also emphasizes that given the nature of the Mpox virus, continued research and effective public health responses are essential to managing potential outbreaks in the future.
GHTM congratulates Professor Ana Abecasis on this milestone in her academic and scientific career, which highlights the impact of her work and the international recognition of the research conducted at GHTM | IHMT-NOVA. The full article can be found HERE.
