New Contracts Reinforce Stability and Scientific Excellence at GHTM | IHMT NOVA

On July 31st, 2025, a contract signing ceremony was held at the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine of NOVA University Lisbon (IHMT NOVA). The event marked a significant step in consolidating academic ties and reinforcing the scientific teams within the GHTM Research Unit, that support the institute’s mission. It reflects IHMT NOVA’s ongoing commitment to research excellence and to building long-term stability within its academic community.

The contracts signed under the FCT Tenure Programme span several key research areas within the institute:

  • Medical Parasitology: Dr Gustavo Cassiano, Dr Sandra Antunes, and Dr Joana Marques.
  • Biomedical Sciences: Dr David Pires and Dr Victor Pimentel
  • Tropical Health : Dr José Pedro Gil
  • Global Public Health: Dr Sofia Seabra

Additionally, Dr Sofia Santos Costa was appointed Assistant Professor in the Medical Microbiology Unit.

During the ceremony, Professor Filomeno Fortes, Director of IHMT NOVA, congratulated the researchers on their scientific and academic accomplishments, emphasizing that they represent the future of the institution. Professor Miguel Viveiros, Vice-Director, underlined the responsibility and challenge of maintaining the high standards of scientific and educational excellence that define IHMT NOVA. Professor Paulo Almeida, President of the Scientific Council, also shared words of recognition and welcome.

This occasion reflects GHTM | IHMT NOVA’s strategic vision to reinforce its research and teaching capacity, through the consolidation of highly qualified teams committed to advancing global health.
