Hepatitis Delta remains one of the most neglected infectious chronic hepatitis worldwide. In Brazil, its burden is heavily concentrated in the Western Amazon, particularly in the state of Rondônia, where a significant number of cases occur among Indigenous populations.
The disease in this region presents unique clinical patterns, along with distinct challenges in diagnosis and treatment. Limited access to healthcare and geographical barriers further complicate effective management.
This GHTM Session will explore Hepatitis Delta from an Amazonian perspective, highlighting regional epidemiology, clinical features, and current approaches to care. Understanding these local realities is essential to improving outcomes and guiding future strategies to address this overlooked disease.
About Juan Villalobos Salcedo
Juan Villalobos Salcedo is an Infectious Disease Physician with a strong academic background in tropical and infectious diseases. He holds a Master’s degree in Tropical Medicine from the Universidade de Brasília, focusing on diseases prevalent in endemic regions and their clinical and epidemiological impact. He completed a PhD in Sciences (Pathogen–Host Interaction) at the Universidade de São Paulo, developing advanced expertise in the biological mechanisms underlying infectious diseases. He combines clinical practice with research interests centered on host–pathogen dynamics, contributing to a deeper understanding of disease progression, diagnosis, and treatment. His work is particularly relevant in high-burden and resource-limited settings.
