Rural populations face significant barriers to healthcare access, including geographical isolation, shortages of healthcare professionals, transportation difficulties, and health services that are often not adapted to rural realities. These challenges can contribute to delayed diagnosis, inadequate management of chronic conditions, and reduced access to preventive care.
In Brazil, despite the expansion of Primary Health Care, reaching dispersed rural populations remains a significant challenge, requiring innovative approaches that bring healthcare closer to where people live and work.
In this GHTM Session, Dr. Renilson Rehem will present Saúde no Campo, a rural health programme designed to improve access to health promotion, preventive care, and healthcare system navigation among rural populations in Brazil. The presentation will describe the programme’s implementation and initial results, highlighting its approach to addressing healthcare access challenges in rural communities.

About Renilson Rehem
A medical doctor graduated from the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), Renilson Rehem holds a Master’s degree in Health Administration from the Institute of Social Medicine at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). Between 2015 and 2020, he served as President of the Brazilian Institute of Social Health Organizations (Ibross). He has held several positions in public health administration, including at the Bahia State Department of Health and the National Institute of Medical Assistance and Social Security (Inamps). From 1998 to 2002, he served as Secretary of Health Care at the Brazilian Ministry of Health, and from 2007 to 2009 as Deputy Secretary of Health of the State of São Paulo. As a specialist in Public Health Management, he provides consultancy services to the National Council of Health Secretaries (Conass) and international organizations, including the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and the World Bank. Since October 2024, he has served as Director of Health and Social Promotion at the National Rural Learning Service (SENAR).
