GHTM Session: Bridging perspectives over the Atlantic: evaluation of new azole derivatives against Staphylococcus aureus

June 4, 2025

📅 Date: 04 June 2025
🕒 Time: 11:00-13:00
📍 Location: ZOOM & Sala Cambournac | IHMT-NOVA

Bacterial resistance is a serious public health problem. Staphylococcus aureus is the etiologic agent of a wide variety of community and hospital-acquired infections. This pathogen is recognized for its high capacity to develop resistance to antibacterial agents.

Key Highlights from the Session:

  • Dr. Barreto presented preliminary findings from his one-year postdoctoral research project at GHTM | IHMT-NOVA, financed by CNPq and involving several other research groups from Brazil and Argentina.

  • Promising activity was observed in several new azole derivatives against Staphylococcus aureus, including some drug-resistant strains.

  • Engaging discussion ensued on the potential application of the compounds to other model organisms, such as fungi and protozoans, and on the experimental strategies for the next steps.

About Humberto Barreto

Humberto Medeiros Barreto is a biologist with a PhD in Biotechnology. He works as a professor and researcher in Microbiology in the Graduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Federal University of Piauí. His research experience includes studies to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of natural or synthetic compounds against drug resistant microbial strains.
