The GHTM | Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (GHTM | IHMT NOVA), was actively represented at the 14th European Congress on Tropical Medicine and International Health (ECTMIH), held from 29 September to 2 October 2025 in Hamburg, Germany, under the theme “Better health for all in a changing world”. Organized by the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine under the auspices of the Federation of European Societies for Tropical Medicine and International Health (FESTMIH), the congress gathered over 1,300 participants from Europe, Africa, the Americas, and Asia.
The scientific programme covered seven major areas: Immunology and Interaction; Emerging Infections: Pandemics and Control; Tropical Medicine: Diseases and Care; One Health: Approaches and Solutions; International Health: Travel and Migration; Vulnerable Populations: Poverty and Neglect; and Non-Communicable Diseases: Challenges and Society.
GHTM | IHMT NOVA was represented by the researchers Isabel Craveiro, from PPS-GHTM Research Group, Jorge Seixas and Márcia Medeiros, from IHC-GHTM and the PhD students Rafael Rocha and Fernanda Salvador, from VBD-GHTM, who actively participated in scientific and institutional sessions:
- Isabel Craveiro presented the poster “Identifying demand-side indicators for health workforce planning models: a scoping review”, conducted in collaboration with researchers from PHRC – ENSP NOVA.
- Márcia Medeiros delivered the oral presentation “Isothermal nucleic acid amplification with recombinase polymerase for rapid detection of drug resistance in Plasmodium parasites – a feasible point-of-care technology”, developed in partnership with Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Spain.
- Rafael Rocha presented the poster “Nocardia asiatica lymphadenitis in a lung transplant recipient and medical tourist: a diagnostic challenge”, in collaboration with the Centro Hospitalar de São João, Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, and Hospital Conde de Bertiandos, Ponte de Lima.
- Fernanda Salvador delivered the oral presentation “Expanding access to specialized care for Neglected Tropical Diseases – A pilot implementation study of Telemedicine for Chagas disease and cutaneous leishmaniasis in a national reference public hospital in Brazil”.
- Jorge Seixas, GHTM | IHMT NOVA representative to FESTMIH, participated in the federation’s annual General Assembly.
The congress offered an important platform to share knowledge, foster new collaborations, and strengthen GHTM | IHMT NOVA’s role in research and training in Tropical Medicine and Global Health. The 15th European Congress on Tropical Medicine and International Health will take place in Barcelona in 2027.
