Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (IHMT NOVA) hosted the members of the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) of the GHTM R&D Unit for a two-day visit, bringing together SAB members, GHTM leadership, and research teams.
The 1st Meeting of the SAB for the 2025–2029 mandate, held on 24–25 November 2024, focused on discussing the Unit’s strategic scientific direction for the next five years and supporting the Selection Procedure for the Scientific Coordinator and the Scientific Committee of GHTM | IHMT NOVA.
Overview and Evaluation of the 2020–2024 Mandate
On 24 November, members of the Scientific Committee of GHTM presented the GHTM 2020–2024 Overview and Evaluation Results, providing a comprehensive assessment of the Unit’s scientific performance and achievements over the previous mandate.
The day also included a Plenary discussion on the 2025–2029 Scientific Commission Proposal, allowing SAB members, leadership, and researchers to review and provide strategic input on the proposed scientific structure for the next mandate.
SAB Activities on the Second Day
On the morning of 25 November, SAB members held internal meetings to discuss their evaluations and formulate their final recommendation to the Director of IHMT NOVA regarding the selection of the Scientific Coordinator and the Scientific Committee of GHTM. This process ensured a rigorous, evidence-based, and strategic recommendation, integral to the Unit’s governance and future scientific planning.
The Scientific Advisory Board
The Scientific Advisory Board of GHTM comprises five internationally renowned scientists, whose expertise reflects the Unit’s core scientific domains:
- Armando Teixeira-Pinto – Faculty of Medicine and Health, Sydney School of Public Health, University of Sydney
- Afrânio Kritski – Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro
- Magda Robalo – Institute for Global Health and Development
- Manuel Mateus Webba da Silva – Biomedical Science Research Institute, Ulster University, United Kingdom
- Sylvie Manguin – Institut de Recherche pour le Développement, Montpellier
Their distinguished careers and global experience provide essential strategic guidance and independent evaluation to advance GHTM’s mission in global health and tropical medicine.
