GHTM Clinical Session | Specialised travel medicine consultation at Geneva University Hospital (Switzerland): expatriates and immunocompromised individuals

March 10, 2026

📅 Date: 9 April 2026
🕒 Time: 18:00-19:00
📍 Location: ZOOM

In this GHTM Clinical Session, Tomás Melo Bandeira will explore the specialized travel clinic at Geneva University Hospitals (Switzerland), with focus on expatriates and immunocompromised patients. Integrated within the Tropical and Humanitarian Medicine service, this clinic illustrates the important role such units play in a university hospital setting.

The service operates through a multidisciplinary team and close collaboration with other hospital departments and external partners. In daily practice, the travel consultation often involves patients with complex comorbidities and specific risk profiles.

A key aspect is the pre-immunosuppression assessment, including targeted screenings and vaccination planning to reduce infectious risks. The clinic also provides pre- and post-travel consultations for expatriates, humanitarian workers, and immunocompromised travellers, ensuring tailored prevention strategies and appropriate follow-up in the context of global mobility.

About Tomás Melo Bandeira

Tomás Melo Bandeira completed his Master’s degree in Medicine at NOVA Medical School – Universidade NOVA de Lisboa between 2011 and 2017. Since 2017, he has been pursuing specialised medical training in Switzerland in Internal Medicine and in Tropical and Travel Medicine, expected to conclude in 2026. In 2020, he obtained the Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTMH) from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. Alongside his clinical training, he has been involved in humanitarian medical work. In 2018, he worked with ERCI – Emergency Response Centre International in Greece, supporting healthcare for displaced populations. He later joined Médecins Sans Frontières, working in Sudan in 2021 and South Sudan in 2022. In 2024, he completed a tropical medicine rotation at the Christian Medical College in Vellore, India. His professional interests focus on tropical and travel medicine, particularly in the care of expatriates, humanitarian workers, and immunocompromised travellers.
