Between 3 and 5 July, the 2024 edition of “Encontro Ciência”, an important meeting point for the scientific community, took place in Porto.
This year’s motto was “+Science for One Health and global well-being”, promoting many moments of dialogue, knowledge and conviviality.
In this context, the Associated Laboratory in Translation and Innovations towards Global Health (REAL) organised the Thematic Session dedicated to Global Health in One Health, with the primary aim of presenting this thematic line and the most relevant research projects, which aim to respond to the multifaceted challenges inherent in the field of global health, with particular emphasis on infectious diseases and mental health.
As a member of REAL, the GHTM was present at the event with the presentation of the EuCARE and CLIMOS projects by Ana Abecasis and Daniela Nunes, respectively.
“The EuCARE project gives us new learning for new pandemics, what we should do or not do in the future, always with a strong evidence base and the weight of the benefits and risks of the decisions made”
According to Ana Barroso Abecasis, professor of IHMT-NOVA, THOP-GHTM researcher and researcher from EuCARE Project, this is “an European project that covers several distinct components, among which the study of school cohorts stands out, with “the development of COVID-19 screening activities in schools and sequencing of the detected variants”. “Understanding how the variants circulate in schools and their relationship with the preventive measures that are being implemented is important for assessing the psychological impact of these measures,” an impact that is known to be “very important”, especially among High School students.
For the researcher, this type of initiative is an opportunity to “publicise science and make the science produced in the laboratory visible to the community, which is very positive”.

“CLIMOS: a crucial initiative that fosters the sharing of knowledge on One Health, driving innovations that tackle the challenges posed by climate change”
For Daniela Nunes, “presenting the CLIMOS project at Ciência 2024 during the “Global Health in One Health” session was a pleasure. The presentation highlighted how CLIMOS aims to mitigate the emergence, transmission, and spread of zoonotic pathogens, with a particular focus on sand fly-borne diseases, utilizing Eco-Health and OneHealth approaches”. The Project Officer also mentioned that “this initiative is crucial as it fosters the sharing of knowledge on One Health, driving innovations that tackle the challenges posed by climate change. Engaging in these discussions and contributing to the global health dialogue is essential for advancing our understanding and response to health threats”, concluded Daniela Nunes.
Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, REAL contributes to improving global health through precise public health methods, integrating biological and social dimensions in a population-based approach to promoting health equity.
