Between July 1st and 5th, GHTM-IHMT welcomed three high School students for an internship, as part of the Ciência Viva initiative “Scientific occupation of young people on holiday”.
Under the coordination of Pedro Ferreira, UEI Medical Parasitology researcher and member of the VBD-GHTM Research Group, Maria Nogueira, Mariana Jorge and Luna Nascimento had the opportunity to integrate the dynamics of a research laboratory and develop an internship on the theme: ‘The helminths around us! Come and find the helminths near you!’
Aimed to “acquire knowledge about helminths that spend part of their lives in the soil (STH – Soil Transmitted Helminths) and how some can cause disease in humans, as well as their importance in Public Health”, and “to alert students to how environmental conditions and human behavior can lead to STH dispersion”, the high school students had the opportunity to developed fieldwork collecting soil and sand samples from potential geohelminth habitats in the IHMT’s gardens. They also learnt programming skills and developed a research project on geohelminthiases.
During this week, the young scientists developed a very comprehensive project that culminated with the presentation of the activities carried out and the results obtained.
Manuela Calado, Isabel Maurício and Pedro Ferreira, VBD-GHTM Researcher members, accompanied these students.
