On 11 February, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science is celebrated worldwide. This day was established by the United Nations in 2015 to recognize the critical role of women and girls in scientific advancement and to promote gender equality in science, technology, engineering, and medicine.
At the Global Health and Tropical Medicine Unit (GHTM), we proudly highlight the essential contributions of women researchers in advancing tropical medicine and global health. A cornerstone of this effort is the MulhereSTrop – Network of Portuguese Speaking Women in Tropical Health, a network led by GHTM that brings together women scientists across tropical medicine disciplines. Coordenated by Isabel Maurício (VBD-GHTM), the network fosters collaboration, mentorship, and professional development, providing women researchers with opportunities to lead projects, share knowledge, and strengthen their scientific impact both nationally and internationally.
Through initiatives such as workshops, collaborative research projects, and leadership training, MulhereSTrop empowers women researchers to advance their careers while addressing pressing health challenges. By highlighting the achievements of women at GHTM and within the MulhereSTrop network, this day underscores the importance of gender equity in science and reaffirms GHTM’s commitment to a more inclusive, diverse, and impactful research community.
At GHTM, we believe that science is stronger, more innovative, and more impactful when women are fully represented, supported, and empowered. We stand with all women in science—those leading research today and those who will shape the discoveries of tomorrow—and reaffirm our commitment to creating environments where talent, curiosity, and leadership can thrive without barriers.
The theme of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGIS) 2026—“Synergizing AI, Social Science, STEM and Finance: Building Inclusive Futures for Women and Girls”—highlights the importance of integrating multiple disciplines to create opportunities for women and girls in science and innovation.
As UN Secretary-General António Guterres reminds us:
“We must ensure that every girl can imagine a future in STEM, and that every woman can thrive in her scientific career.”
To mark this important day and engage with these topics, join the commemorative session “Igualdade na Ciência para a Ciência” on 11 February at 15:00, in person or online, featuring Dr. Marina Birrento. Full details are available here: 🔗 Igualdade na Ciência para a Ciência
