The documentary Anopheles premiered on 6 July, bringing international attention to the malaria research being conducted in São Tomé and Príncipe in support of the global fight against the disease.

Among the featured researchers is João Pinto, researcher form the VBD-GHTM Research Group at Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (IHMT NOVA). His work is carried out within the framework of the University of California Malaria Initiative (UCIMI), an international collaboration in which GHTM | IHMT NOVA is a partner.

Filmed in São Tomé and Príncipe, where malaria remains endemic, the documentary highlights an integrated scientific approach that combines field and laboratory research to investigate the mosquitoes responsible for transmitting the disease. The research focuses on mosquito biology and ecology, feeding behaviour, mechanisms of insecticide resistance, and population dynamics, providing essential knowledge to support more effective vector control strategies.

In addition to advancing scientific research, the project aims to strengthen local scientific and technical capacity by establishing molecular biology infrastructure and providing specialised training for students and healthcare professionals in medical entomology, vector surveillance, and PCR techniques. Community engagement also plays a central role in supporting the implementation of innovative disease prevention and control strategies.

As malaria continues to represent one of the world’s most significant public health challenges, this research contributes to the development of sustainable and evidence-based approaches to disease prevention and control, reinforcing the importance of international collaboration and scientific innovation in improving global health.
