Aging in the Lusophone World: GHTM | IHMT NOVA Collaborates on International LEIASS Publication

January 20, 2026

The Conselho Nacional de Secretários de Saúde (Conass) has launched the 14th volume of the International Editorial Line for Health Systems Support (LEIASS), a publication that focuses on aging in the lusophone world: contrasts, challenges, and public policies.

Developed in partnership with the Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (IHMT NOVA), the publication explores the heterogeneity of aging in Portuguese-speaking countries. It contrasts consolidated aging in Europe with the rapidly growing elderly populations in Latin America and Africa, often in contexts marked by social and institutional vulnerabilities.

The book brings together critical reflections for health managers and professionals, addressing sociodemographic issues, the impact of migration and transnationalism on the lives of older adults, and the challenges posed by multimorbidity and the need to reorganize health care networks. In addition to examining public policies and the specificities of island nations such as Cape Verde, the publication delves into urgent topics such as combating ageism, applying multidimensional health models, and managing frailty, aiming to support strategies that ensure healthy and equitable aging across the Lusophone community.

The launch included a joint statement from Filomeno Fortes, Director of IHMT NOVA and member of IHC-GHTM Research Group, and Tânia Mara Coelho, President of Conass. Contributions from Isabel Craveiro, Tiago Correia, and Paulo Ferrinho, researchers from PPS-GHTM Research Group, underscore IHMT NOVA’s role in advancing the international debate on aging, public health, and equitable policies.

This collaboration highlights GHTM | IHMT NOVA’s commitment to research-informed public health strategies and the importance of international partnerships in addressing the challenges of aging populations in Portuguese-speaking countries
